R.I.P. Bart's

We're very sad to hear about this to say the least. It's true - Bart's is closing. Collectively, we've probably spent thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours in the depths of Bart's stacks. Our good pal Jon Martinez (in the photo), DJ Rootz, and DJ Vajra were always there in the height of our digging. We'll miss you sorely. Another record store down. Boulder has lost an institution. Rest in Peace oh dealer of DJ crack.

New Release: Spaceflight Orchestra - An Orchestra of Remixes, Volume Two

ARTIST: Spaceflight Orchestra
RELEASE: An Orchestra of Remixes, Volume Two
TRACKLISTING:
1. Step Now (Quincy Jointz Remix)
2. Lead Jammer (1st Lieutenant Middle St. Remix)
3. What It Shall Be (Love Machine Mix by Astro Raph)
4. Solid (Drop Logik’s Soft Intake)

Black Bridge’s finest producers and friends break down and remix their favorite Spaceflight Orchestra tracks.

First up is a remix by Germany’s rising star of funk, Quincy Jointz. Qunicy is widely known as one half of the duo, Geriba, as well as extensive remix work for the top tier of funk breakbeat artists including work on a wide variety of labels including Ft. Knox, Timewarp, and Aniligital. This is a mellow groove down happy times lane with lilting cowbell and mellow tron stabs. Sprinkles of horn’s and nice trippy breakdowns round out the dub synths on this lazy joint.

1st Lieutenant Middle St. flex’s his funk muscle on the “Lead Jammer” remix. Diving kick drum and a stompy break ride out a groovetastic bongo sample into the funky promised land. Synths fired from the mothership and deranged slide guitar licks swell together and create a driving funky fever.

Astro Raph’s “Love Machine Remix” of “What it Shall Be” puts James Brown in a blender set to a schizophrenic puree. Oceanic washes and deep synths dance a dizzying tango with the beat, dropping you off into pristine spaces, only to be swooped up again and sent down the groovy train express. Astro Raph’s brilliant production and twisted sequencing keep the listener on a rolling mental water slide.

Drop Logik’s “Soft Intake” remix of “Solid” is just that - a beautiful cotton puff of a track that falls on the ear as if delivered by a summer breeze.  That is if the cotton was grown on Venus and the breeze originated in the Andromeda Galaxy. Add to that a funky alien synth and syncopated rhythm and you get a goregusly crafted track that will most likely increase your I.Q. upon first listen.

Stephen Powers' Love Letter Project

Espo (aka Stephen Powers) is one of my favorite artists, and this project is absolutely beautiful. From the website: "Love Letter is a project by Stephen Powers with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and is sponsored by the Pew Center for Arts & Heritage through the Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative. Generous support provided by the Brownsetin Group and Septa."

The Boombox

While perusing the Joy Engine blog today, I was pleasantly reminded of the great NPR feature earlier this year on the beloved Boombox.

There's a Fungus Among Us

Those nerd muffins otherwise known as the Black Eyed Peas have fessed up that they are indeed outright thieves. Nice guy Adam Freeland spoke out and let the world listen to one of these instances earlier this year. The Peas have now paid off Freeland without having to face the boys in blue. Amazing how one of the world's most popular bands making bajillions of dollars off of their bajillions of fans can easily just opt out of being creative on their own.

New Release: Spaceflight Orchestra - An Orchestra of Remixes, Volume One

ARTIST: Spaceflight Orchestra
RELEASE: An Orchestra of Remixes, Volume One
TRACKLISTING:
1. Step Now (J-Boogie Remix feat. Aima the Dreamer)
2. Step Now (J-Boogie Instrumental feat. Aima the Dreamer)
3. Step Now (J-Boogie Acapella feat. Aima the Dreamer)
4. Step Now (J-Boogie Remix feat. Aima the Dreamer) - Radio Version
5. Truer Than True (Drop Logik Refreak)

LISTEN/PURCHASE:
iTunes
Beatport
eMusic

J-Boogie (of OM Records’ J-Boogie’s Dubtronic Science fame), purveyor of all things funky, takes his remix of Spaceflight Orchestra’s “Step Now” into deep sexy waters. Head nodding funk, soul claps, and sultry vocals from Aima the Dreamer wrap up this gem of a track like a silk sheet dipped in melted butter. “Don’t sweat the petty things baby, you can pet my sweaty thing baby”, is the PG-13 rated chorus that urges people to let the less pressing issues of the day go by the wayside in favor of hot and heavy lovemaking:  a fine theme for this skillfully executed re-work. We’ve also popped in a bonus accapella and instrumental for DJing pleasure. Keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming video!

Add in Drop Logik’s mondo psychedelic “Refreak” remix of “Truer than True”, and you’ve got one of the hottest Black Bridge releases to date!!

Royal Gorge Train Bombed

Found this on the interweb the other day. Looks like one of the parked Royal Gorge passenger cars got taken over - not sure what year this is. This is the very train that lives a few feet from our beloved Black Bridge. Full photo here.

EyeWriter

Check out this amazing new gadget, the EyeWriter, and watch graffiti artist Tempt One rock his styles on a huge scale from his hospital bed.

In their words: "Behold the latest ocular assault weapon from the Graffiti Research Lab, openFrameworks, The Fat Lab and The Ebeling Group: The EyeWriter. It is a low-cost eye-tracking apparatus + custom software that allows graffiti writers and artists with paralysis resulting from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to draw using only their eyes."

We learned of this through the MeanRed Productions newsletter.

Serve My World

Our good friend Sara Tea to asked us to provide some music for a cool project. Her friend Jillian is helping kids get a better education.

In her words: "Hi Everyone! I'm Jillian and I love helping others. Right now I teach at-risk youths in L.A., but next year I'm selling my stuff and taking my love global, volunteering in Third World countries providing orphans and street-kids with a basic necessity in life: education. I held a fund raiser at ServeMyWorld.tumblr.com to raise money for orphanages I will be volunteer teaching next year in South America, Africa and Asia. For every $10 donated your name got entered into a drawing and the winner gets to pick any redic tattoo for me to get! We raised over $3,600! This video documents the day I got the tattoo!"

Poole's Diner

Black Bridge queen bee Lauren Ivey is putting in hard hours in the kitchen at an amazing restaurant in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina - Poole's Diner. The spot is super fresh, the food is amazing, and the critics are continually raving. If you're ever in the area, make it a point to show up with an empty stomach.

We're thankful he was running late...

We are happy our man Psychonaut was running late to his dj gig at Sand Bar in Vail last night. He just narrowly missed being in the middle of this!
