We're happy to introduce our new Black Feather Series, a proposed suite of releases focusing on a more DJ oriented side (of disco & house leanings) to our downtempo eclectica. There’s no one better to kick things off than Maasa, a new alias of celebrated soulful house producer Matthew Bandy. Behind the helm of Deep House Souldiers, Bandy is responsible for a number of top tunes, including his “This Is Why We Dance” single which found itself on Ben Watt’s
bestselling Buzzin’ Fly Vol. 1 compilation. Not content to stay with one style, Bandy created Maasa to explore more eclectic, mid-tempo, disco-based endeavors. The 70’s Born EP is Maasa’s inaugural expression.

With this EP, Bandy’s Maasa project attempts to capture the sounds of his early inspiration, mainly the funk and disco music from the 70’s and early 80’s. Instruments of the era were used including Rhodes piano, clarinet, and early Roland Juno and Arp synthesizers. The feeling is authentic but brushed with a contemporary feel; groovy for dancefloors of the present day. This is exemplified by the lead track “Walking On The Moon.” Fitted with a strong 80’s funk bass and rhythm track the cut also sports a rich vibe with spacey melodic touches that will easily entice today’s nu-disco DJs.

Many of these same sonic elements are blended and given a more uptempo backdrop in the following track, “Sound FX.” Disco strings, horns, and funky synth action tie together a resolute groove handily winning over deeper dancefloors. “70’s Born” is another uptempo wonder adding a more percussive backdrop into the mix. Bass melodies guide the way as Maasa’s now familiar string, rhodes, and synth embellishments accurately recall some of the production hallmarks of the decade in the title. Finally, “Walking On The Moon” is revisited with a crafty electric boogie remix by Brooklyn’s  In Flagranti (Codek Records). The original’s heavy bass presence is the anchor as the inventive In Flagranti crew inject dubby percussion, large synth pads, and cosmic elements into their offering.

The future just got a bit more galactic ...

New Release: Mr. Anonymous - Level With Me Up

ARTIST: Mr. Anonymous
RELEASE: Level With Me Up
TRACKLISTING:
1. Level With Me Up

As we've previously announced, all of Mr. Anonymous' music is available for free at the official Mr. Anonymous
website.

Original drummer for The Samples, Jeep Macnichol, (a.k.a. Mr. Anonymous) is ready to drop yet another fresh single called “Level With Me Up”. This track features a masterful dialogue of machine-gunfire talk-boxing, soaring autotune falsettos, crushing live drum dancehall beat, and orchestral string psychedelia. With the addition of the Korg mini-moog and talk-box to his arsenal of instruments alongside crushing tribal timpani riffs, Mr. Anonymous journeys further into the melodic stratosphere with this toe-tapping wall of sound.

Wednesday Nightcap Re-cap & Video by Steve Conry

Black Bridge Kicks Off the Communikey Festival of Electronic Arts at Bombay Bistro (2010) from cinesthetics on Vimeo.

Our friend Steve Conry of Cinesthetics made this super dope video capturing the essence of our Wednesday Nightcap party before the Communikey Festival in Boulder, Colorado, in April.  We LOVE it - and hope you do too! The featured song is an upcoming Black Bridge release by the talented artist known as Maasa (aka Matthew Bandy).

Guest DJs Roy England (Make Mistakes) and Ejival (Static Discos, Mexico) both tore it out! Check out Roy's set here.

iVictrola iPhone Phonograph

Love this. Combining cutting edge technology of the early 20th century and the 21st century comes the iVictrola.  To use the iVictrola, simply place the iPhone in the dock of the walnut base  and turn on your favorite tunes. The sound is carried from a hole in the base and is amplified by the metal Magnavox horn to fill the room with your tunes.  Each vintage horn will be different from the next so you will have to allow a lead time of 6-8 weeks when ordered. Found here.

New Release: Drop Logik - Hot Box Studies

black bridge,drop logik
ARTIST: Drop Logik
RELEASE: Hot Box Studies

LISTEN/PURCHASE:
iTunes
Dancetracksdigital
Beatport
eMusic

We’re proud to introduce you to the debut full-length artist album from Black Bridge’s very own Drop Logik.

Hailing from the mountains of the Southwest United Crates of America, a sound physician was born. Making drum kits out of trash cans, empty paint barrels, and whatever the hell else made noise, Chad Dixon aka Drop Logik aka Crate Diggler, began rearranging sound from an early age. Moving on to simply looping beats from dual cassette decks to buying his first sampler and drum machine and so on and so forth. It’s always been an outlet of inner combustion ready to be released into your headphones. Now is the time to press play!

Hot Box Studies bangs out space age mental gymnastics with crunchy samples and syncopated beats. Musical movements are cut together with turntablist acumen across a deep abyss of sound as swirly interludes play between the loftier scores. Stand out picks include the cut-em-up-flapper “Hear To Wear”, the sultry big beat “Get!Get!”, and the outer space gospel “Out Of My Head.” Finally,“Smoke Ring Dreams” brings us home and serves as your well deserved introduction to the one and only Crate Diggler.

This track features a psychedelic mix of live steel drums and distant guitar chime over a slamming reggaton bass drum groove. With soaring autotune melodies to the extreme, Anonymous ventures further into the ethereal stratus, like a T-Pain track on mushrooms. Death Calls the Tune

Created by German design collective lab binaer, this ingenious turntable-based light sculpture was made by applying light-sensitive phosphorescent paint to the turntable and replacing the needle cartridge with an LED light. As you can see in the video, this changes the table’s function, creating a visual player out of an audio player. The LED cartridge creates the individual characters by exposing the paint to specific patterns of light pulses which are controlled via an outboard microcontroller.

Titled “Death Calls the Tune,” the piece is a visual statement about news, death, and memory. What you see displayed are real news bulletins, all related to death, strung together to create a never-ending flow of headlines. The cycle of bright and fading text is meant to represent the cycle of our collective memory, mirroring the way that forgotten thoughts are so quickly replaced with new information.

We found this on the Dancetracks blog.
